Research Support Specialist – 2102370

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University is accepting applications for a Research Support Specialist in the Lab of Dr. Michael Frisk. The Research Support Specialist will assist the The Frisk Lab at SoMAS by providing support to the South Fork Export Cable (SFEC) project, with responsibilities that include the following:

Onshore Duties:

  • Purchase supplies, build gear systems and pre-cruise organizing
  • Under supervision of Principal Investigator, maintain a research database; assist with preparation of reports to sponsors; and develop manuscripts for scientific journal publication.
  • Assist graduate and undergraduate students working in the laboratory in support of processing biological samples and analytical analyses.
  • Assist with onshore work for other ongoing projects conducted by the laboratory.

At Sea Duties:

  • Primarily support the South Fork Export Cable (SFEC) project that maintains a large nearshore ocean telemetry network and will be expanded.
  • Maintain South Fork Wind Acoustic Array
  • Acoustically tag Atlantic sturgeon, winter flounder, black seabass, and other species.
  • Lead cruises to support biological sampling and mooring deployment.
  • Assist with field work for other ongoing projects conducted by the laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): 
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Evidence of research experience organizing and supporting marine and/or fisheries field-based research activities. Familiarity working with data and database management.

Preferred Qualifications: 
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in biology, fisheries, ecology, marine sciences, oceanography or related field. Experience working with acoustic telemetry data. Experience acoustically tagging shark and finfish species. Experience working on research vessels. Experience with a range of sampling gear including otter trawls, beam trawls, long-lines and shark gear. Experience presenting and communicating scientific results.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
