The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University seeks a part time Research Technician II to support efforts in developing diagnostics of derived atmospheric processes to validate operational weather models. This project will add software modules to the Meteorological Evaluation Tools (MET) program and evaluate for a few different weather phenomena.
Brief Description of Duties:
Working under general supervision, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of routine and semi-skilled tasks to support and directly assist an advanced research project in the lab. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and staff. Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Under the guidance of PI, conduct research and gather data using various methods. Assist with developing diagnostics to validate models using Python.
- Under guidance of PI, perform laboratory analyses, data analysis and write data reports.
- Participation in lab meetings. Share results with collaborators.
- Laboratory cleaning and maintenance of supplies according to SBU Laboratory Safety guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Associate’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time experience verifying numerical weather prediction models using data.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Atmospheric Sciences or related field. Proficiency with gridded model data to validate weather phenomena (e.g., cyclones). Experience with Python. Experience utilizing statistical approaches for validating models. Experience collaborating with a federal or state agency (e.g., NOAA) on a project or tool. Experience working with the Meteorological Evaluation Tools (MET) software
