The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) of Stony Brook University seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Associate position under Prof. Ellen Pikitch‘s supervision.
Preferred Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. in Marine Science or Fisheries Science. Three years of research experience (obtained before, during, or after Ph.D.). Previous experience with fisheries sampling and survey work. Proven record of successful publishing in peer-reviewed literature. Ability to undertake fieldwork in varying conditions and be comfortable handling sampling gear for fieldwork processes (i.e. while trawling – pulling in the sampling gear by hand, hauling sampling buckets on and off the boat, carrying supplies to and from the boat and/or van, etc).
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with fish and invertebrates of the U.S. Northeast coast. Some understanding of estuarine ecology. Experience in conducting standardized trawl surveys. Quantitative data analysis skills.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will manage the fish-related work of the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program. Responsibilities will include planning for, conducting, and leading all research cruises, completing permitting and reporting requirements, managing a fisheries database, analyzing and synthesizing data, as well as maintaining inventory and day-to-day readiness. Incumbent will also work within the broader scope of the Shinnecock Bay Restoration program to strengthen the scientific team and provide input on maintaining and growing the program.
The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
- Data Analysis. Overseeing student help to input survey data; understanding elements of the collected seasonal data, and overall time series data; synthesizing collected data to reveal trends; preparing appropriate graphs and written material; devise new approaches in the examination and interpretation of collected data.
- Conduct field research by attending and overseeing bi-weekly research cruises from May to October (approximately 10-12 trawls per year) – this includes under varying conditions, handle sampling gear for fieldwork processes (i.e. pulling sampling gear by hands, hauling sampling buckets on and off the boats, carrying needed supplies to and from the boat and/or van). Train and supervise staff, students and volunteers with regard to the trawls and research cruises.
- Project Management. Includes obtaining all necessary permits through Stony Brook University and the NY State DEC; making preparations for research cruises; maintaining necessary and adequate supplies; tracking budget balances and expenditures; and coordinating and supervising students and volunteers.
- Manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and peer-reviewed publications.
- Prepare PowerPoint presentations and lectures to project sponsors and the general public.
- Generate new and cutting edge ideas to grow and strengthen fish-related ShiRP activities. Participate in ways to strengthen IOCS’s scientific activities as a whole.
- Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines, and availability of funding. This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
